You asked a lot of questions, but I don't have the answers to any of them. All I can answer is that it was his mother Debora Kuttner (nee WESIZ) who was from Újvidék (Novi Sad). The father Miksa Kuttner was born in Mosonszenpeter (Gyor-Sopron-Moson) and studied in the teacher's seminary in Papa (he is briefly mentioned here on page 69). Like Mr. Pfeffer, I also noticed thar Mr. Blau's book does not offer an address for where the Kuttners lived in Bonyhad, but I have no further information.

Dear Reuven Chaim Klein,

Yesterday I read the Hungarian edition of the book you mentioned, it helped me a lot to start to dig a bit deeper into the documents. Now I am about to listen to the audiovisual records of Leslie Blau and others.

I am trying to understand Jozsef's possible connection with my grandfather (Gősi János) who passed away a few years ago. He had cca the same age of József, lived in Tamási. His cousins around the same age were József's schoolmates in Bonyhád, as you may see. My grandfather attended elsewhere as far as I know, with very good marks.

This name Kuttner József is quite rare and on the basis of this book there were multiple opportunities when his life could interfere with my other ancestors', maybe in Szeged. It could be a friendship, a roomkeeper, charity help, neighborhood, something informal, a personal, everyday relationship, a simple human act. Our grandparents who survived those horrific times found it very important to tell us these micro-anecdotes, and we have already recorded some of them, revealed and supplemented with documents, but this time I really don't have any starting points.

I was trying to find the house the Kuttners lived in Bonyhád. I only found the ortodox elemental school, is it possible that they also lived in that building, as his father was the director of the school? Or did they have an own house somewhere else?

The book mentions that their parents Miksa (1897?) and Debora (1900?), one of them was from Újvidék (Novi Sad), but this is not clear for me, where the parents come from? I have not started to dig into the matriculas, do you have any information on this?

In Szeged, maybe József stayed in dorm (probably the Jewish had their own), or could he afford a room for rent? Maybe he could stay at a relative? Could he have any jobs besides the university? Teaching, translation, maybe at the MIEFHOE? Could he have any special interests, like arts, writing, musical instruments maybe?

Any of these could be a good start for me, and probably you have something in the raw manuscripts, pictures, letters, or some memories, any kind of artefacts. These kind of "unimportant" data could have been eliminated from the original collections. With time I may find the answer for some of these questions on my own, then I will let you know, but I would be grateful for any tiny trace of additional information your family may have for the side of ours on Jozsef's life.

If you need some more data for your review publication, please let me know, maybe I can help you again.

Sincerely,

Anikó Gősi

Joszef Kuttner's sister, Roszi Kuttner (later Klein) was my grandmother. The Kuttner family lived in Bonyhad and had 6 children, 3 sisters who survived the war and eventually moved to America, plus two sons and one daughter who died. From what I understand, Joszef Kuttner returned home from university to be with his family and that's when he was killed.
My great-uncle Leslie (Laszlo) Blau wrote a book about Bonyhad in English in 1994 that was translated into Hungarian in 2008. I helped work on a Hebrew version of the book in 2010, and now we're relooking at the Hebrew version to prepare it for more serious publication. What else would you like to know?

Dear Reuven Chaim Klein,

My name is Anikó Gősi, from University of Szeged.
Here you can find an open-access instance of the resource behind the subscription-based database (Arcanum):
On this site you may find documents of other years, where József Kuttner is mentioned multiple times.

While doing this research, his name seemed quite familiar to me, and there is a chance that his life story has some connection with my familiy, living in Bonyhád or Szeged. Can you tell me anything about the Kuttner's place of living in Bonyhád? Or his address in Szeged?

I was trying to look for some traces of József here in Szeged. I used to work at the university library for a few years but I have very limited experience on iudaica archives and data sources, I have few results yet.
University students had a kosher mensa with a strong local community of the young, this still can have some relevant documents, it is even possible that someone had some memories on him.

Please let me know if I may help you with more, and I would be grateful if you shared some info with me, too.

My colleague from the Strategic Directorate Anikó Gősi has managed to collect information on your grandmother's brother. Although we all know about this horrific period of our history it is always heart breaking to pass information.

He was born in 1922. He lived in Bonyhád and studied at the Lutheran High School, with excellent results:

He started his studies in Szeged as teacher of Hungarian literature in 1942 at the Állami Polgári Iskolai Tanárképző Főiskolán (State TEacher Training College):

He was a diligent and hardworking students who often took extra courses. Once his transcripts got lost:

"Kuttner maintined his universty studies in Szeged with excellent result. He visited home in the summer 1944 , but when he saw that all men were taken to labour service, he stayed home. He was taken to Auschwitz from where he never returned" (page 168. image 3.)

Sziasztok,

http://univ.bibl.u-szeged.hu/16289/1/evkonyv_1942_43.pdf (71. oldal)

This is a Hungarian translation of the book Bonyhad: A Destroyed Community by Leslie Blau. This book relates the history of its people, their scholarly Rabonim, it pictures their pious lifestyle, how they lived and how they perished in the Nazi Holocaust. The story follows the survivors, how they tried to rebuild their shattered lives and their community, and continues through their exodus in 1956, to where they are now and how they remember.

A könyv angolul is létezik

https://books.google.hu/books?id=D9ptAAAAMAAJ&q=Kuttner&dq=bonyh%C3%A1d+jew&hl=hu&source=gbs_word_cloud_r&cad=4

This is the story of the renowned Jewish community of Bonyhad, a small town in the Hungarian countryside. It tells the history of its people, their scholarly Rabonim, it pictures their pious lifestyle, how they lived and how they perished in the Nazi Holocaust. The story follows the survivors, how they tried to rebuild their shattered lives and their community, and continues through their exodus in 1956, to where they are now and how they remember. Bonyhad: A Destroyed Community is an easy-to-read, well-documented work.

Az Egyetemi Gyűjteményben talán tudnak többet segíteni (az angollal nem tudom, hogy állnak), de még én is szétnézek még egy kicsit, hátha találni róla valami érdekeset

I am looking for information about my grandmother's brother Jozsef Kuttner who was a student at the University of Szeged during World War II. Can you put me in touch with the relevant archivist or historians associated with the University who might be able to send me any relevant information and/or documents about my grandmother's brother?

Re: Who is Sheindel?

Okay, here's my working theory: I think that Miksa/Meir Kuttner's mother Lotta was also named Sheindel. Does that make sense? Lotta is her Hungarian name and Sheidel her Hebrew name? As you might know, Miksa Kuttner was not born in Boynhad but in Mosonszenpeter now known as Gyor-Sopron-Moson. At the JewishGen.org website, I found that in the cemetery there (known as the Györ-Szigeti Temetö cemetery) is a tombstone for Yosef Kuttner (which is the same name as Miksa Kuttner's father, so it's probably him) and for Sheindel Kuttner, who I'm theorizing was his wife.

Was she perhaps a great-grandmother, not grandmother?
