As I stated in my other email to you, I am the son of Michael Klein. All of what you see (i.e. everything on the domain myhomeloancompany.com) is my doing, he barely touches a computer. The genealogy research is all mine, In my research I have never found a Brandel Berta Klein that was related to me. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Thank you very much for your reply. Let me ask you something else: I found this link: www.myhomeloancompany.com/kleins/backup.html via google and it says "Abraham Peres AXELRAD b. 1898 Rosvigovo, son of Chaim AXELRAD & Berta/Bella Klein..." etc.
Now, as I mentioned , this sentence is taken from an e-mail written by Linda Cohen from Michigan, USA and it was mailed to you...Unfortunately, that link is not available anymore and I could only reach the home page www.myhomeloancompany.com
Abraham Peres Axlerad is my late grandfather and he was married to Brandel Berta Klein, my late grandmother.
Inside that web site, I found the name Michael Klein as one of the owners of that site and loan business.
I have a feeling that this guy is a family relative because my mother recall that at least one brother of her mother Brandel, if not two of them, immigrated to the US before WWII. As I understood, you designed that web page, right ? If this is correct, you must know this fellow Michael Klein. Do you have his e-mail address and maybe you know more about his family (father, grandfather, etc.) ?
Thanks again for your cooperation and SHABAT SHALOM.

First of all, I'm not a Rav.
As far as I can see, my roots are from the towns of Kleczanev and Davidoff which are near Munkacs and Munkanz itself. Further into history, my family comes from Wolbrom in Poland.

Reuven Chaim Shalom Rav,
I am looking for family relatives by the name of Klein from the villages mentioned above. I know that you had a connection with Mrs. Linda Cohen (Katz) from Michigan, USA and I also contact with her with regards to my 2nd part of my family, Axelrad. I wonder if your roots are by chance from those villages. My grandmother was Brandel Berta Klien and my great grandmother is Bajle Klein (born in Hrusovo), both married with Axelrad.

I actually run this website for me father, so this isn't Michael answering, but rather his son. The page you found is now part of the 2003-2004 Archives on the Klein Family Genealogical Webpage. If you go to http://www.myhomeloancompany.com/kleins/backup.html and search (CTRL+F) for "TITLE: EKSTEIN post on Jewishgen" you will see an email which I received from someone regarding your family. According to my research there is no connection to my family. Now to respond to your other email...

I thought you’d be interested in seeing an article that I wrote in early July for my Shul’s newspaper. The procedure referred to took place during the week of July 17-22, 2005.
Steve Schwartz
To Save a Life; To Remember a Life
I’ve been given the opportunity to save someone’s life. In so doing, I will help to commemorate the life of a wonderful, sweet young man who died too young.
Nearly twenty years ago, a close friend of mine organized a massive drive to find a bone marrow match for her brother. That’s how I got onto the registry of the National Marrow Donor Program. A match was found but, for some reason, the transplant never happened. Maurice Philip Raphael Herschfus (of blessed memory) lived several more years in remission before succumbing to his illness. Now, because he lived, I may be able to give another young man some years to add to his current 32, and I can’t help but think that this is yet another tribute to the life of young Maurice.
I remember, as a child, how my father (of blessed memory) would receive awards and certificates for giving large amounts of blood each year – he was a real champion at donating blood. I tried to emulate him, I really did. But giving blood was not my thing. After several bad experiences donating blood (passing out, severe bruising on my arm), I gave up. Whenever a blood drive was announced, I hid. I claimed I was “too busy.” And I was ashamed of myself. After all, my father did it, why couldn’t I?
Then, about 2 months ago, the call came – I was a 100% match for a young man with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Without a bone marrow transplant, he would probably soon die. They found no one else who was a 100% match. How could I say no?
The updated procedure now is to do a “stem cell transplant” rather than an actual bone marrow transplant. They’ll inject me with a drug (filgrastim) for five days to stimulate the movement of stem cells from my bone marrow into my bloodstream. Then, for two days, they’ll hook me up to a machine that will take my blood out of one arm, remove the stem cells from my blood, and then return the blood into my other arm.
I admit that I’m a little scared. If I can’t even donate blood, how can I survive two days of having blood taken from one arm and then put back into the other? Also, the filgrastim typically causes headaches, bone or muscle pain and nausea. It doesn’t sound too pleasant. But then I think about a 32-year old whose life is hanging in the balance. And I think about Maurice, for whom I had myself tested so many years ago. And the “unpleasantness” doesn’t seem too important anymore.
For information about the National Marrow Donor Program, visit www.marrow.org on the web, or call (800) MARROW2.

While I have been researching my family history and genealogy for about a year and a half now, I haven't gathered that much information about the Iseerles side of my family. This is what I do know: my gggg-grandfather, R' Binyamin Eliezer Ungar-Auerbach (son after son, the generation before my family adopted the surname KLEIN), married the daughter of R' Yaakov Charif of Wolbrom, Poland. Rabbi Charif is reputed as being a descendant of both the TaZ and the ReMa. Therefore, it states in my ggg-grandfather's sefer that he was a descendant of the ReMa and TaZ. That is my basis for my claim of descent from the ReMa. There a quite a few semi-comprehensive biographies of the ReMa available, they pretty much repeat the same basic information R' Issserles. That is basically all the information which I have on the subject. I recently received a biography of the ReMa in the mail from a fellow researcher who paid for its publishing in honor of his daughter's marriage. The book, is in Hebrew and is called "Toldos HaReMa." I haven't read through it in its entirety yet, but I plan to eventually do so after my trip to Israel in August 2005. It's good to hear that people are going to visit Krakow to see learn about the ReMa.
If I could ask of you a favor, would please be so kind as to take some pictures of the ReMa's shul and other religious places on interest on your trip to Europe and email or snail mail the pictures to me. I'm always very interested in seeing these kinds of places, even if I can't go there myself.

Dear Reuven,
I've just discovered the JewishGen web site, where I came upon your name. I am the grandson of Rose Isserles, who left Poland around 1907. I will be visiting Krakow and the Remuh Synagogue this August, for the first time. Do you have any thoughts or information you'd like to share with me? I don't know much about my family history.
Thanks very much,

I looked back in my records and I can't find that original email from the lady who went to his kever, all I found was the reply which I sent her that you found on my website. I suggest that you search her name on Google http://www.google.com/search?q=%22Judi+Langer-Surnamer+Caplan%22 &btnG=Search&hl=en&lr= and see if you can contact her, she probably has more information than I do, I was only answering her question about where the name Peiros Genusar comes from. Hatzlacha Raba in your search. Perhaps you would like to get involved in the Jewish Genealogical Society, their website is http://www.jewishgen.org and they are really helpful in mind own research.
On an unrelated topic, I run a website called Rabbinical Authority Consortium of HACKers, the URL is http://rachack.blogspot.com maybe you would like to check it out.

I was doing a Google search and came upon a statement written on 2004.11.24 by Judi Langer regarding her visit to Rabbi Avraham Eliezer Alperstein's grave in Mt. Judah. I am Rabbi Alperstein's great-grandson. His book can be accessed on the web via www.seforimonline.org I would be curious to know if there was a specific reason why Ms. Langer went to Mt. Judah to visit his grave. I am trying to gather information on the life of my great-grandfather and have noted on my visits to his grave that others have also been there. Rabbi Alperstein died in 1917. All of his chidren have left this world, as have most of his grand-children. I believe that most of the poeple visiting his grave are not his decendents. I would very much like to know the reason why his grave attracts the visits of non-family members. It would be greatly appreciated if you would contact me regarding this issue since I am trying to understand the life of my great-grandfather.
In a completely unrelated matter, I had a letter to the editor published Friday in the letters to the editor section of the New York Times related to Israel (July 15, 2005). You may find it of interest.

Do you know where the book is available in Toronto? I guess
I could call the Jewish Public Library- but they aren't always so current.
Do you think the two names are the same place?
I am looking for a connection through the Stein family to the Bais Yosef.
Do you know of any?Thanks.

Hello!
In your letter you mentioned a place called Bonyhad in Hungary.
I found a place called Banfhoinead( between the mountains of Transylvania)
where a Rabbi Peretz Tuvia Stein had a yeshiva.
Might this be the same place?
And do you have any information about the Jews there in the 1900's?
Sorry, but I don't have any info for your questions.
But, I do know there is a book on Hungarian Rabbis by Abraham Fuchs and
there might have been mention ofa Rabbi Kuttner.
I hope I am remembering correctly.
All the best,

I'm sorry, but I've never heard of Rabbi David CHARIF, nor did I even know that BARDACH stands for B'nei Rabbi David Charif. I'm just an amateur. It could be a different CHARIF related to the TaZ because I know for sure that the CHARIFs that I've been researching are Leviim and thus are most likely direct male descendants of the TaZ. I still don't know how any of this fits in with the ReMa.

Subject: BARDACH
Hello Reuven--
I noted with interest your post in Ravsig today. I remember hearing
that the progenitor of the BARDACH family (the family of my wife's
ggf, prominent in Lemberg and elsewhere in Galicia) was related to
TaZ. It was a complicated relationship, possibly a mechutin, and not
a direct blood relationship. BARDACH, as you probably know, is an
acronym for B'nei Rabbi David CHarif. So there is probably a
connection there to your story. The problem is that I have never
heard that the Bardach family were Levis. By the time my
mother-in-law was born, the family were completely assimilated in
Germany and would not have known or cared whether they were Levis.
But the records in Lemberg also don't refer to them as Levis. If
Rabbi David Charif was TaZ's mechutin, it wouldn't be a problem, but
if your Charif's were Levis, that does raise questions.
Of course, I'd be especially interested in any clues to the
intervening generations of Bardachs; I can only go back to the start
of the Lemberg records, where we have two addiitonal generations
bringing us back to about the 1790s: Jacob Kopel Bardach m. Malka
Koehlman or Kehlman; their son Isaak, b. Mar 1822, m. Rosalie/Rachel
Jasser from Brody; their son Karl, b. 1857/59 was my wife's
great-grandfather.
If there is also a connection to ReMA, that would provide the
long-sought connection between my family (I am descended from ReMA's
brother Eliezer) and my wife's.

Thanks Reuven, it'll take me two or three days, but I'll definitely send the pages out. Meir wunder's encyclopedia is not so easy to get hold of, even in hebrew speaking Israel, especially for me who lives in the golan Heights. But it's in any serious library, which is when i photocopied the relevant pages.
It seems we have the same "machsom" (barrier), how to connect the Taz, who died in 1660 something, to the 1800s. I woiuld dearly like to know, for instance, through which one of the Taz's children do the lichtigs-Sterns connect?
I know that R' yosef charif was a levi, and so was the taz- that does that mean it's through one of his sons, and not one of the daughters? and that it's a fathe rto son link for those 200 years? Who knows, with a trwo hundred year gap, it doesn't have to be that way. When you ask around, ask this question, though i'm pessimistic if you get an answer.

Hi Reuven, I got your email, I have to rush off now, but let me know-
do you want the pages scanned or snailmailed?
If you're not desperate, I'd rather snail mail- what's your address?
But bekitzur- Rav Meir wunder wrote a unique, scholarly five volume encycloedia of "meorei galizia". To find out about this work, go from the "jewishgen" home page to "special interest groups" (rabbinic), from there to where it says "online journal", from there to "reviews", and from there to "book review-meorei galicia".
As far as rabbinic genealogy goes, Rav Wunder is considered by many to be the most outstanding contributor to this topic in the twentieth century. I've had the zchut to speak to him by phone. He is retired and a bit elderly now, but lives in Yerushalayim.
The encyclopedia is in Hebrew, but between the two of us (we're both dati, and I've been living in Israel for over 20 years), we'll manage.
From the top of my head- R' Yosef charif is mentioned in at least one book as being migeza or mitze-etzaei hataz, and this is corroborated by other books where his cousins from the name of stern are also written as tze-etzaei hataz. One of the books even mentions why his branch changed his name froim "stern" to "lichtig", there's a whole inyan about it. He and his cousins are about ten or so in number, all are in Meir Wunder's book, so there's a lot of corroboration.
How do you know of r'Yosef charif? are you related?

Shavua tov,
I saw your 29 April letter in ravsig.
Do you have the entry of "R'Yosef Charif" from Meir Wunder's book? It gives a few more details about his family tree. I have photocopies of the relevant pages
I also have a photocopy of the relevant pages of a book published in Munkatch in the 1930s by a grandson or greatgrandson of R'Yosef Charif, one of the Weisses, which specifically mentions that he is a descendant of the Taz. I found this book in the Bar-Ilan library, also via the information in Meir Wunder's book.
I'm also looking to trace my wife's ancestry to the Taz, she connects to Sterns in Munkatch (Sterns and Lichtigs relate to each other), but i'm having a real challenge going back further than the mid eighteen hundreds.
Maybe we'll pool our resources?

I'm trying to verify Rav Binyamin Eliezer Ungar-Auerbach (my gggg-grandfather) was the son-in-law of Rav Yosef Charif, and I'm trying to find out exactly how R' Charif is from the TaZ.

Danny

I have not seen the entry of "R'Yosef Charif" from Meir Wunder's book, so it would be very helpful for you to please send the copies, I would very much appreciate it. So now that we both know that R' Yosef Charif is a descendant of the TaZ, do you have the exact yichus for him, or is it only based on a kabbala? I don't know anything about the Stern or Lichtig families in Munkatch. Maybe if you search around on my site, you could find something helpful. My address is http://www.myhomeloancompany.com/kleins

Maybe we'll pool our resources?

to find out more information about my gggg-grandfather and also my newly

like what I am looking for. Sorry.
I noticed in the tree that you sent me (pg. 6, 7th to the last line) that
the sefer mentions that you are a descendant of the Noam Elimelech (R'
Elimelech from Lizhensk). I am also through my grandfather's mother's side
(the Eckstein/Freidmans). Regarding the dates of Eckstein/Freidman, all I
know is that my grandfather was born in 1910 or 1912 (conflicting sources)
and he was their second (and last) child. He was the son of Chaya Zlata
Freidman, who was the daughter Devorah Eckstein and Eliezer Freidman, so
probably Eckstein/Freidman's marriage was in the mid to late 1800's (only my
own guesstimate). Their daughter Chaya Zlata married my grandfather and
lived Klyachanovo a village near Mukachevo. So really I don't have that much
information about this Eckstein/Freidman line yet.

Hi,
I do not have the information you seek regarding R' Yosef
Charif, but please contact Reb Meyer (pronounced
My-ehr)Weiss of Union City. He is at 201-348-2951. Please
give him my regards (remind him that his aunt Aggie is my
aunt).
As for ECKSTEIN, I hope you realize that the Bnei
Yissoschur was a great-nephew of the Noam Elimelech
(through his mother). Can you supply dates and place or
residence for Eliezer Friedman and Devorah Eckstein?

Do you have any sources which say that R' Binyamin Eliezer UNGAR-AUERBACH was a son-in-law of Rabbi Yosef Charif, or do you know where I could look? Also, do you have the years which Rabbi Charif lived and any more biographical information about him?
Regarding the Ecksteins, all I know is that my great-grandmother Chaya Zlata Mermelstein nee Klein nee Friedman (who married my great-grandfather Mordechai Klein) was the daughter of Eliezer Friedman and Devorah Eckstein, and that supposedly Eckstein was a known descendant of the Noam Elimelech, but I can't find out anything more about this anywhere.

As far as I can see, my roots are from the towns of Kleczanev and Davidoff which are near Munkacs and Munkanz itself. Further into history, my family comes from Wolbrom in Poland.

I know that you had a connection with Mrs. Linda Cohen (Katz) from Michigan, USA and I also contact with her with regards to my 2nd part of my family, Axelrad.

I've just discovered the JewishGen web site, where I came upon your name. I am the grandson of Rose Isserles, who left Poland around 1907.

All the best,
M. Sapirman

My ggg-grandfather, Reuven Chaim Klein, wrote the sefer Shenos Chaim. In the 1985 edition, published by Mechon Yerushalayim, it says that he was a descendant of the ReMa and the TaZ. I wanted to find out how, so I spoke to another researcher who is related to me (we met through JewishGen) and he told me that the Shenos Chaim's father, Rav Binyamin Eliezer Ungar-Auerbach, was a son-in-law of R' Yosef Charif, and the latter is "known" as a descendant of the TaZ. I'm trying to verify Rav Binyamin Eliezer Ungar-Auerbach (my gggg-grandfather) was the son-in-law of Rav Yosef Charif, and I'm trying to find out exactly how R' Charif is from the TaZ.

If you would prefer to snailmail it to me, then my address is: Reuven Chaim Klein, 12366 Chandler Blvd. #B, Valley Village, CA 91607. I look forward to reading about this.

I only found out two days ago that my gggg-grandfather was a son-in-law of
R' Yosef Charif, as of now, I'm still trying to verify that it is true and
to find out more information about my gggg-grandfather and also my newly

that search? You refered to a YITZCHOCK Charif and YAKOV Charif, not Yoseph
like what I am looking for.

Subject: RE: CHARIF and ECKSTEIN
If I have a chance I will IY"H call up Reb Weiss.
Regarding the dates of Eckstein/Freidman, all I know is that my grandfather was born in 1910 or 1912 (conflicting sources) and he was their second (and last) child. He was the son of Chaya Zlata Freidman, who was the daughter Devorah Eckstein and Eliezer Freidman, so probably Eckstein/Freidman's marriage was in the mid to late 1800's (only my own guesstimate). Their daughter Chaya Zlata married my grandfather and lived Klyachanovo a village near Mukachevo. So really I don't have that much information about this Eckstein/Freidman line yet.

Hi,
I do not have the information you seek regarding R' Yosef
