Please see http://kleinfamilygenealogy.blogspot.com/ for the family tree. By the way, I am getting married in two months and I am printing a Kuntress for my Chasuna. I was thinking that I should send you a copy of the Kuntress because you sent me copies of two kuntressim which you printed for your simchos. Is your address still 15 Darenth Road, London N.16 6 EP England? By the way, do you know any information about more kesavim of the Shenos Chaim which were never published besides those on the first nesivos of Rabbeinu Yerucham? --- === Reuven Chaim Klein Genealogical Researcher JewishGen ID #106665 --- On Thu, 11/18/10, Abraham Klein <ak@ksh.org.uk> wrote:

I have one copy of the magazine, but I've asked people in Bet Shemesh that if they have it and don't need it, I'd take it from them. We'll see how many copies I get.
Obviously, I'll bring them with me when I come in.

Subject: My grandfather worked for the AgencyTo whom this may concern:
My late grandfather was a worker for the former Jewish Agency for Palestine. His name was Reuven Chaim Klein, or as he was known to the secular world, Rudolph (or Randolph) Klein. Attached to this letter, in PDF format, is an article printed in the New York Times (June 23, 1941) about my grandfather. It tells that he was released from jail under Nazi command because his services were needed by the Jewish Agency for Palestine in Vienna. He then served in the British and American armies during World War Two. The article makes mention of a brother of his who fought in the British army in then-Palestine. It isn't known who this is a reference to, perhaps the Agency knows of my grandfather's family and who this brother of his was and anything about his family. My grandfather passed away in 1968 when my father was a mere child. I would like to ask if the Jewish Agency for Israel, the successor to the Jewish Agency for Palestine, has any records regarding my grandfather’s employment for the Agency and/or anything else that might relate to my grandfather such as his personal history, the exact nature of his “mission†for the Agency in Austria (or at least a general idea of what he did), or anything that just has my grandfather’s name in it. I would like to please request from the Agency to pass along copies of any such records or information to me either via email or postal mail. My postal address can be given upon request and confirmation of the existence of such information about my grandfather. If the Agency or the person who reads this letter does not have access to such information or records, can he or she please pass or forward this letter on to someone of such power and/or refer me to such a person or resource? I would really like to understand more about that period of time and about who my namesake and grandfather was and what he did.
Thank you in advance for your help,

Dear Mr Klein,
Your email concerning your grandfather has been passed to me by my colleague, Sharon Goldberg. Unfortunately, the information you requested is not something that we would normally retain in our London Office.
However, as you may be aware, the Head Office of the Jewish Agency for Israel is located in Jerusalem, Israel and it would be there that any information may reside. The offices can be contacted via their web site www.jafi.org.il or by post to their offices at:
The Jewish Agency for Israel
48 King George Street, POB 92, Jerusalem 91000 Israel
In terms of historical data, much of the history of the Jewish Agency is maintained at the Central Zionist Archive (CZA) in Jerusalem and it may well be that they are better placed to assist you in your search. The CZA has its own website which can be accessed at http://www.zionistarchives.org.il/ZA/pMainE.aspx and the site includes specific information and access points for relatives who wish to access the range of resources, held at the CZA.
I would have thought that the CZA would be your most reliable source of information relating to your grandfather but, should they not be able to assist, an enquiry through to the Jewish Agency's main Offices may yield some information.
I trust that the above is of help and I wish you every success in your endeavours.
Yours sincerely,
Howard Palmer

* Here is a correction to what I said earlier. The Shenos Chaim had a son Benyomin Eliezer. In addition to his son Moredechai (by the way, my father said that he was an artist), he had a daughter Zesul. Zesul had a daughter Hinda. She was my grandmother. That makes my grandmother and your grandfather first-cousins.
* My father confirmed that he has the Yechus back very far for the Shenos Chaim. I will get it from him and share it with you.

Rabbi Reuven Chaim Klein, a famed descendant of both the Rama
and the Taz, was born in 1826 in Cracow to Binyamin Eliezer
Ungar-Auerbach. After becoming an orphan at a young age, he changed his
last name to "Klein." He studied in the yeshiva of the Chatam Sofer in
Pressburg and in the yeshiva of the Gaon Rabbi Meir Aish, the author of
the Imrei Aish. He was the Av Beis Din (head of Rabbinical Court) in
Davidoff near Munkatch. He died and was buried in Vienna in 1873. He
wrote a sefer entitled Shenos Chaim (literally, "Years of Life") which is a commentary on the 14th century Talmudist Rabbenu Yerucham's work Toldos Adom V'Chava (literally, "The Progeny of Adam and Eve"). The Chida (Chaim Yosef Dovid Azuli) writes in his book Shem HaGedolim
(literally, "Names of Great Ones") that all people who wrote a
commentary on Rabbenu Yerucham's sefer (book) died an early death.
Rabbi Reuven Chaim was of no exception as is affirmed by Rabbi Elazar
Gartenhaus is his commentary to the Chida.

Rabbi Dovid ben Shmuel HaLevi (1586-1667) is famous for his commentary on the Shulchan Aruch known as the Turei Zahav (literally, "Rows of Gold"). He is called by the acronym of this work, Taz. He also wroteDivrei Dovid
(literally, "The words of David") on Rashi's famous commentary on the
Torah. As the fabled son-in-law of the Bach (Rabbi Yoel Sirkis the
author of the Bais Chadash, literally "New House", on the Tur),
he was Chief Rabbi in three major centers of Jewish life in Europe,
namely, Posen, Cracow, and Lemberg (Lvov). He lived in turbulent times
for Jews with many pogroms and the rise of the false moshiach (messiah,
annointed one), Shabsai Tzvi. His son and son-in-law (the Sha'gas Aryeh) investigated this false moshiach. He lost two sons to Cossack killers in 1664.

Rabbi Moshe Ben Yisroel Isserles (1525-1572), better known by his acroynm, Rama (or Remah) was one of the leading Torah scholars of his day. He is famous for his notes (entitled the Mapah, or "Tablecover") on Rabbi Yosef Cairo's Shulchan Aruch (literally meaning "Set Table), which note the Ashkenazic (Eastern European) customs in comparison to the Shulchan Aruch's Sepharadic (Spanish, Palestinian, Syrian, Middle-eastern) customs. He also wrote the Darkei Moshe on the Tur at the same time as Rabbi Yosef Cairo was writing the Beis Yosef on the Tur. Rabbi Isserles was born and died in Cracow. He was the great-grandson of the first Rav of Brisk, Rabbi Yechiel Luria. His first wife was the daughter of Shalom Shachna, the Rosh Yeshiva in Lublin and predecessor of the Maharshal ZT"L. She passed away at the young age of 20, and Rabbi Isserles dedicated the Isserles Shul in her honor. His later wife was the sister of Yoseph ben Morechai Gershon HaCohen. Rabbi Moshe founded the Yeshiva (Jewish School) in Cracow. In addition to being a master in Gemara (Talmud) and Kabalah (Mystic Jewish Works), Rabbi Isserles was well-versed in Greek Philosophy, history and astronomy. He has been known to quote the Rambam (Maimonides) and Aristotle on many issues involving Hashkafah (Jewish thought).

Devorah Eckstein and how I can get in touch with more relatives who are also
from the Noam Elimelech? All I know about CZ Freidman
was that in her second marriage she lived in Kleczanev
which is a town near Munkatch.

To Reuven Chayim Shalom and Shavua Tov,
Enclosed I am sending two consecutive descendants lists (D32207.TXT) and
(D73147.TXT) of Eliezer Lipman WEISSBLUM father of Noam Elimelech.
You should find how do you, or actually how Chaya Zlata FRIEDMAN and Dvora
ECKSTEIN, connect to the list.
I would appreciate if you would share with me your findings.
Also, was your grandfather, the son of Mordechay KLEIN, called also Reuven
Chayim? Or, how do you connect to Mordechay KLEIN?
Best regards and Chodesh Tov Yehuda
Numbers marked with # are ID code numbers of the person. You may always
refer to the persons by their ID numbers #.
Numbers in square brackets [ ] are the numbers of the references.
The location of the asterisk * behind the dots represents the number of
the
generation.
The data is as good as my references if you find any mistakes, errors,
discrepancies that may impair my data please inform me.

Hi,
I am only aware of an ECKSTEIN connection to the Noam Elimelch via
Pesach LANGSAM (c.1748 - c.1820). He was a nephew of the Noam
Elimelech. His mother-in-law was a sister to the Noam Elimelech.
He was also the father of the Bnei Yissoschur, R' Hersh Mylech SPIRA
(1783 - 1841).
Pesach LANGSAM had a daughter that married an ECKSTEIN. More info
on this family can be found at my website at: http://www.langsam.com
The specific page within the site that deals with ECKSTEIN is at:

Hello again Stan,
There are indeed Sephardim in Eastern and Central Europe. In the
case of my wife's family, members of the Abravanel family were
located in a small town in Poland and in Berlin.
There are generally two ways this happened. The first, of course, is
escape from the inquisition/force exile from Spain which you have
pointed out. The other is trade. Many Sephardic families were in
international trade. Parts of some Sephardic families from Iberia
would move to ports and trading cities of Europe. Many of the ports
cites of the Med Ocean had large Sephardic communities. From these
port cities the traders moved inland.

I Am Rachack: hello, are you availible to talk right now?
PJL427: yes
I Am Rachack: i was looking at my records, and I have an email that I sent you in aug. re: genealogy, and u never wrote me back
PJL427: who are you?
I Am Rachack: = Reuven Chaim Klein
PJL427: What was the email about Reuven?
I Am Rachack: can i re-send it to you so you will see?
PJL427: yes.
PJL427: what is your email address, I will look for it?
I Am Rachack: rachack@futurecities.com
I Am Rachack: i resent it so you dont have to look
PJL427: about Noam Elimelich?
I Am Rachack: ya
PJL427: I think I asked you what city that your Eckstein's and Friedman's came from
I Am Rachack: right
I Am Rachack: and i said i wasn't sure, but i think probably munkatch or somewehre around there
PJL427: What country is Munkatch in?
I Am Rachack: Ukraine
I Am Rachack: sometimes it was in Russia and sometimes in Hungary
PJL427: Were those the Friedman's or the Ecksteins?
I Am Rachack: I don't know
PJL427: There are several Ecksteins that intersect in our family.
I Am Rachack: do u have a tree that i can look at?
PJL427: George Eckstein born 7 Jul 1896 and died Sepp 1974 was married to my Grandmother's baby sister
I Am Rachack: too recent
PJL427: They lived in Clleveland, Ohio. I do not know where he came from or where he was born
PJL427: All I know about him is that he was very nice to my father when he was a youngster during the depression
PJL427: There are many other Friedman's from a different part of the family
I Am Rachack: do u have a tree of the noam elimelech's family?
PJL427: I have a lot of Friedman's but do not rememeber saying that I had a Noam Elimelech. I a looking to see what exactly we migh have been talking about
PJL427: There is an Isaac Friedman that connects into the Levitansky family that goes back to 1824, but there are no dates, just 9 children and many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren etc
I Am Rachack: ok
PJL427: The Friedman's that are most closely related to me are the Friedman's from Romania. They were very prominent and in Who's Who in WOrld Jewry in three generations
PJL427: O dpm
PJL427: O dpm
PJL427: I don't have all of them
PJL427: sorry, the machine is mis typing
PJL427: I have the generation of my grandfather and the one before that. He was born in the 1880's
PJL427: The Grandfather of my Grandfather's first cousins named Friedman was named Haskell Friedman. I know nothing about him besides his name
PJL427: There is a legend that part of the family lived in Russia or the Ukraine and that they would go back and forth
I Am Rachack: interesting
PJL427: My Great grandfather's first wife had a daughter who married a cousin FRIEDMAN
PJL427: Soemhow in a previous generation, a child's mother had died and the fgirl was taken to Russia to be with the grandparents
I Am Rachack: have you heard of the city "Kleczanev"?
PJL427: When the father was ready to get the little girl back they would not release her back so he kidnapped her and brought her back to Romania where she married a cousin there.
PJL427: I have not heard of Kleczanev
PJL427: sounds Ukrainian
I Am Rachack: it is Ukranian
PJL427: I think that the area around the Black Sea was a Unit area for the Jews
PJL427: There was a lot of interrelationships with the people from Odessa, and Romania.
PJL427: Do you know where your town was in the Ukraine?
PJL427: Was it close to Odessa or Kiev?
I Am Rachack: "near Munkatch:
PJL427: Where is Munkatch?
I Am Rachack: ukraine
PJL427: Ukraine is huge
PJL427: Let me look it up in WOWW
I Am Rachack: ok
PJL427: Munkacs=Munkazs-Munkatsch=Mukachevo
PJL427: pop 11313
PJL427: 182 km SSW of LVOV 48 degrees 27'/22 degrees 43'
PJL427: AKA Mukaczewo
PJL427: It is closer to Lvov which was the capital of Galicia during the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire
PJL427: Lvov is also called Lemberg
PJL427: My GGGF was born in Bobrka in 1824 which was 15 km from Lvov (Lemberg)
I Am Rachack: was he rleated to the Noam Elimelech
I Am Rachack: ?
PJL427: I don't know. His daughter married one of the Friedman's that I told you about that was running back and forth to the Ukraine
PJL427: There were relatives in the Ukraine. That is all I know. I don't know who they were yet
I Am Rachack: i see
PJL427: Munkatch was closeby but Friedman was a fairly common name
I Am Rachack: ok
I Am Rachack: (by the way, did u keep the IM window open the whole time and record this conversation, because i want to keep it for my records it look at some time in the future?)
PJL427: It is possible, but we would both need more information
I Am Rachack: can u send me an email of the log of this conversation?
PJL427: Sorry, I just don't have enough information to give you more connections. Sure. It is done.

I am researching the Mermelstein nfamily because I know that my
great-grandmother (father's father's mother) married Reb Shlomo Mermelstein
in the small town of Kleczanev near Munkatch. Her previous husband, my
Great-grandfather Mordechai Klein died at a young age and was a descendant
of the Shenos Chaim (as you can see at my webpage about all this

If you are related to the Mermelsteins' of Munkatch, then you may be related
to the Mermelstein family in Chicago and R. Yosef Mermelstein of Rav
Perlow's yeshiva in Boro Park. Please let me know if you are or believe you
may be, and need an introduction.

Perus Genusar are fabled fruits produced in Eretz Yisroel (Israel)
which are so sweet that they have extraordinary effects on the
people who eat them. The Gemara (Babylonian Talmud) talks about it
on Berachos 44a and Megillah 6a. It's a very fascinating idea.

Even though we are not blood relatives, the relationship between my mother and your grandfather and your great-aunt Fayge was very close. When I was growing up, there was no distinction made between my Uncle Rudy or Aunt Fayge and my other aunts and uncles. So you and your family have places of honor in my family tree, despite the title “Family of Reb Shlomo Mermelstein.†As far as I know, both Rudy and Fayge knew my grandfather as their “fatherâ€.

If you have the tree in .gno or .ged format, I can read it so you don't have to export it into PDF. My Rosh Yeshiva is the same way when it comes to Jewish history; officially he gives us a Jewish History class every other Sunday and whenever we have an in-shabbos. Let me do my tracing backwards(starting from me):
1. Reuven Chaim Klein
2. Mordechai Meir Klein
3. Reuven Chaim Klein
4. Morechai Klein
5. Binyomin Eliezer Klein
6. HaRav Reuven Chaim Klein (who wrote the Shenos Chaim which says in the sefer that he is a descendant of the RaMa and the TaZ. And the TaZ's father-in-law was the BaCH)
7. Binyomin Eliezer Ungar-Auerbach (and that's as far back as I know)

I learned in Shaarei Torah when Rabbi Wein was still there too. In fact,

Excellent.
Which yeshiva? I learned in Monsey (where I grew up) at Shaarei Torah before
heading off to college.
Can you read PDF files? I can export part of the tree in PDF format.
I'll try to write out the genealogy for now. Much of this comes orally from
what as told to each generation in my family.
1) Bach (Joel Sirkes)
2) Taz (son-in-law) married Rivka Sirkes
3) Yeshaya Segal OR Aryeh Segal (Shaagas Aryeh) (I'm not certain which son
is the grandfather--still researching).
4) Sorah Segal marries ------? (Last names weren't so common back then, and
it seems to have ben forgotten along with the husband name)
5) Dovid -----?
6) Rivkah -----?
7) R' Avrohom of Bialowierza (Poland)
8) R' Yitzchak of Bialowierza (Poland)
9) Ezra Steinmetz
10) Chaya Weissa Steinmetz marries Moshe Tzik
11) Gitel Tzik marries Yitzchak Yaakov Farkas
12) Rav Avrohom Farkas
13) Tzivia Farkas marries Michael Rosensaft
14) Ezra Rosensaft
I also have dates for most people, but it would be easier in the PDF format.
Please let me know your family history as well. By the way, did you know
that R' Shlomo Carlebach married a descendant of the Bach?

Hi again Reuven!
First, I should have looked at your website before responding I didn't
notice the link until I was sending my answer. If I had, then I would have
realized how much work you had already done and not have given so much
advice, you have done a great deal.
But now that I've looked, I have some questions. The Reuven Chaim Klein who
is the author of one of the books called Shenot Chaim was living in 1860. He
is said in Otzar haRabbonim to be the father of Zvi Dov who in turn is the
father of another Reuven Chaim Klein. That younger Reuven Chaim perished in
the Holocaust, was the son-in-law of Isaia Steiner, and was himself the
author of another book Mateh Reuven. (And there is another Reuven Chaim
mentioned, Reuven Chaim Alexander who also died in the Holocaust.)
So is your Reuven Chaim a different one? And if not can you help me
understand?
Thanks for taking the time,
Deborah Glassman

Subject: Re: ReMa
Hello Reuven
I have my family's descent from the REMA documented and I have looked at
different parts of the puzzle, trying to solve confusions that have arisen.
I do not have an inclusive family tree of the REMA. However the respected
Neil Rosenstein who wrote the book "Unbroken Chain" documenting many
families descent from the Katzenellenbogens has just written a book that is
called the Lurie Legacy and Chapter Nine is all about the descendants of
Moses Isserles (whose grandmother Dreisel was the daughter of the Luria
family. ) I have not yet seen the book and I do not know if the Kleins are
included.
Now separately, I have some suggestions.
Work from the known to the unknown. Your namesake had good reason for
his claim, so even if he does not appear in a genealogy, it does not reflect
on him. Missing siblings, new cousins, whole lines of which we were
previously unaware, show up all the time in genealogy. But if you forget for
the moment, his joy and pride in his heritage and trace his genealogy for
his own value, you may find many things of interest to you. Reuven Chaim
Klein, if an author of some modesty, might well have cited his most
illustrious ancestor and have left off others that men with lesser claims
would have bragged of. So again work backwards. Do you have a copy of his
book? It is the only one cited in Otzar haRabbonim under his name, so he
must have put a great deal of effort into it. Somewhere in its pages he may
have named his father, grandfather, teachers, etc. Most books of limited
availability can be purchased on microfilm, I have frequently found that is
the best way to own a book only available in great library collections.
After you have examined the book, go on to the actual records of his life.
Check online info about the town where he was rabbi. You might find info on
the cemetery where he was buried includes online transcripts of the
gravestones, or pictures. The revision lists for Russian towns are set up in
family units and they tell you where the person was settled previously. You
have to travel three hundred years to get from the Shenot Chaim to the REMA,
two hundred to the TAZ. Take it one generation at a time and you will find
more connections to those same people, and you will also find that people of
noted ancestors were welcomed into families with other noted forbears.
My next suggestion is to search whole families. Look at each person's
siblings and mahatunim. A brother-in-law who seems not to be of interest to
you, might have cited your ancestor with name and patrynomic. He might refer
to somebody by a book name of which you were previously unaware. In the
Russian civil records that are starting to become available we often find
people living in the home of an uncle, a father-in-law, or a brother-in-law.
And finally - Search by jurisdiction. If you know where someone went to
school, then you know a jurisdiction in which they lived - they might have
needed a police permit, they might have needed community support, they might
have received smicha from a particular scholar. Every place is in multiple
jurisdictions and different records are created in each.
You wrote me a short direct note and I gave a long, roundabout response. I
hope it helps, though.
Good Luck.
Deborah Glassman

1. 14-generation ISSERLES tree

From: "Deborah Glassman" <dgg2020@comcast.net>
Date: Wed, 18 Aug 2004 12:31:48 -0400
X-Message-Number: 1
The source for generations 1 through 8 is "Otzar haGedolim"; burials
mentioned for Krakow are from Balaban; the descendants of those from
generation 9 are from Otzar haRabbanim
1. Rabbi Israel of Krems (14th century) author of HaGahot Asheri.
The story of Unetanna Tokef that we relate at Rosh HaShana with the
martyrdom of Amnon of Mainz was passed on through him and attributed
by him to Isaac of Vienna's Or Zarua.
2. Haim of Henborg
3. Rabbi Petatiah ASHKENAZI (13__-died by 1405) m. sister of Rabbi
Aaron BLUMLEIN(d.1421). Aaron's father is not known but he took his
surname from his mother's name, Blumel or Plumel. Petatiah died
while his son was a minor. Petatiah's wife and her brother were
murdered March 12, 1421 in Neustadt. Aaron BLUMLEIN is also
described as one of the martyrs burned at Enns.
4. Rabbi Israel ISSERLIN II aka Israel MARBURGER (1390-1460) m.
Shandelin niece of Rabbi Sholom of Wiener-Neustat (he fl 1380) who
was the son of Rabbi Isaac Zakel who was the son of Rabbi Judah Katz
of Vienna. Judah Katz is said to be the son-in-law of Rabenu Sholom
the maternal grandson of Rabbi Baruch of Rothenburg.
Israel ISSERLIN is the subject of an English language biography in
Jewish Encyclopedia (see jewishencyclopedia.com). He was author of
Trumat haDarshan. He is thought to have been born at Regensburg,
educated in Neustadt at Aaron BLUMLEIN's Yeshiva, moved to Northern
Italy then to Marburg in Austria's Styria where he was the leading
rabbi from 1427. In 1440s he returned to Neustadt where he lived
until his death in 1460s. He refers to his great-grandfather Israel
of Krems, his father Petatiah, his uncle Aaron BLUMLEIN ha Kadosh,
in his writings. He wrote over 250 responsa and was considered the
preeminent authority of his day.
5. Haim sometimes called Haim of Henborg II. See Note for Petatiah
GOLDMAN
6. Petatiah GOLDMAN also called Kokel Goldman (1480s)
This is a note from the writer of this email, Deborah Glassman, not
to be blamed on any other source - but it would seem to be worth
confirming that Haim of Henborg and Petatiah Goldman were two
separate people. Israel ISSERLIN, the Trumat Darshan, lost his father
when he was a child. It would be expected that he named his first
son for that father Petatiah. The name of a man who died before he
was forty was in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries (not
stating that this was necessarily so in the fifteenth century)
modified before giving it to an infant. Haim Petatiah would be one
of the typical forms found in later years. An original document with
both persons mentioned, or Petatiah mentioned after Haim is
described as deceased would be conclusive. Petatiah does not appear
in the cemetery in Krakow where his son's family is buried. Petatiah
is said to be named GOLDMAN from the name of his wife, mother, or
mother-in-law. If he is identical to Haim son of Israel ISSERLIN,
then his mother would be Shandelin, but his wife and mother-in-law
still unaccounted for.

d. 1552, buried Krakow) daughter of Moshe AUERBACH-ISERLIN and of
Moshe AUERBACH's wife Mushkat daughter of Israel ISERLIN (presumed
to be Israel ISSERLIN the Trumat Darshan). Moshe AUERBACH is said to
be the son of Tevele aka David a nephew of Rabbi Sholom of Vienna

8. Israel aka Isserl Lazars aka Israel ISSERLIN (1490s-died 1553,
buried Krakow) m. Dina Malka Shrentzels called Malka (d.1552 buried
Krakow) daughter of Eliezer Shrentzels and Drusila/Dreisel Luria -
Dreisel d.1560 Krakow). Israel was a leading banker and merchant and
he built the synagogue called for his son the REMA synagogue.
[Had children including Moses ISSERLES, Isaac Bogatym,
Eliezer ISSERLES, Miriam Bella who married Pinchas HOROWITZ].

her brother Joseph author of Sherit Yosef is frequently referred to
as Moses' brother-in-law.

Dreisel who is buried in Krakow Cemetery 1560 is Moses ISSERLES's

Dreisel bat Moshe ISSERLES is clearly the daughter of Ms. Katz, as
Moshe's first wife pre-deceased Dreisel's namesake great-grandmother

13.Yentil Leah MEISELS m. Rabbi Shabatei Kohen haSHiK (1621-1662)
Shabatei's children referenced in Otzar haRabanim: (The names of
the daughters are from other sources)
a daughter Tuba who married Rabbi David KATBEN(she died Nisan
1717 in Zolkiew)
a daughter or sister who married Rabbi Isaac Kohen of the
EISENSTADT family, no surname used (the father of Meir, Pnei Meor),
[in Daat Kedoshim she is called Esther sister of Shabatei]. She is
Isaac EISENSTADT's 2nd wife, married in 1656 Vienna. If she is in
fact the daughter of Shabatei, she is also attriobuted with the
following marriage:
a daughter Esther who married Menahem Meinish CHAIT. The CHAITs
had a daughter who married Pinchas who in turn was the father-in-law
of Rabbi Hananiah Lipman MEISELS
a daughter Yochaved who married Rabbi Aaron MAGOZ-ZVI
a son Rabbi Moshe KATZ who married ITTINGER

The only definate connection between ECKSTEIN and the
Rebbbe R' Mylech that I know of was via the Rebbe's sister.
Her daughter (the Rebbe's niece) married Pesach Langsam.
Thet had several children including a girl that married an
ECKSTEIN and lived in Bilka. You can see more on this

My great-grandmother was Chaya Zlata Freidman (Herfather was Eliezer Freidman) and she married mygreat-grandfather Mordechai Klein and afterwards shemarried Shlomo Mermelstein. Chaya Zlata was known tobe a descendant of the Noam Elimelech from her mother,Devorah Eckstein. My question is whether someone canexplain to me this "known" link between the Ecksteinfamily and my gg-grandmother Devorah Eckstein and howI can get in touch with more relatives who are alsofrom the Noam Elimelech?

A US Army uniform, summer khaki, used at least in the 40s and 50s. No stripes on the upper sleeve and apparently no metal bars on either left or right collar meant that he was a Private, the lowest enlisted rank. Usually this is the entry level.

The picture is probably taken in the south based on The Piggly Store behind and the summer US Army uniform. The uniform is devoid of any rank or insignia. I am assuming he was in basic training at the time. He was probably in the initial draft as the post card was dated June 1941 (pre-Pearl Harbor). It is also postmarked Fort Dix which was a major basic training facility.
During the period between the wars, Camp Dix was a training facility for active Army, Army Reserve and National Guard units. The Citizens’ Military Training Camp conducted summer training under the 1st, 77th, 78th and 99th Infantry Divisions. From 1933-1941, Camp Dix was also a reception, training and discharge center for the Civilian Conservation Corps. On 8 March 1939, Camp Dix became Fort Dix as the installation became a permanent Army post. Fort Dix served as a reception and training center for men inducted under the draft of 1939. Ten divisions and many smaller units trained and staged here before entering the battlefields of World War II. At the end of the war, the reception center became the separation center, returning more than 1.2 million soldiers to civilian life.
Good Luck,
Morris Spector

I have an old postcard with a 'notification' from the "Dorothy Rieman
Clipping Bureau" dated June 26, 1941 claiming that it has some intresting
article about my grandfather, Private Rudolph Klein (Reuven Chaim KLEIN) who
was stationed in Fort Dix, NJ, in a New York City Newspaper. Can someone get
hold of this for me or find me more information about my grandfather?
One side of the postcard: http://kleins.100megsfree5.com/pictures/rck2.jpg
The other side of the postcard:
http://kleins.100megsfree5.com/pictures/rck3.jpg
Also, This is a picture of my grandfather in his army uniform at some
unknown place, will some be able to tell me where this is, what country
uniform he is wearing, what is his rank in the picture and if possible, what
year this picture was probably taken?
http://kleins.100megsfree5.com/pictures/rck1.jpg
Any help or suggestions on where I can get some answer would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks,

Let me introduce myself. My name is Meir Zev Greenberger and although I
knew that I was connected to one part of the Klein family (my mother's
aunt was Moshe Ezriel's Klein first wive), I just found out while I was
sitting shiva for my father, that his (my fathers) grandfather Moshe
Greenberger, son of Tzvi Dov Greenberger, had two sisters, Maryam and
Zisi. This Maryam Greenberger married Reven Chaim Klein, who wrote the
sefer Shnos Chaim. So now I am related to most of the Kleins through my
fathers side also.
I was given a family tree printout three weeks ago which I am still
trying to get through, but from what I have seen already it disagrees
with some of the information on the web site. (If I am reading it
correctly).
Do you a a simple descendants tree of the this Reven Chaim Klein &
Maryam Greenberger, so that I can compare the information that I was given?
BTW, where do you live? I live in Flatbush.
Have a Gut Shabbos.

will be glad to help you any way I can
My files are on ftm (family tree amker software) but only a small
minority of the
900 family members are connected to the appeldorfer/apfeld family.
So how do you want to handle this?

Sorry to upset but I know nothing about Zvi Dov KLEIN. He got married to an
Appeldorfer woman who was a descendent of the Weiser family. The family tree
was erected by old Mr. Appeldorfer I give you the e-mail address of his son
Meir; I have no connections with him and hope the address is still
available. May be he knows better.

I have the book, and I met the author, he was formerly rabbi in Prachnik as
mentioned on the title page, the book says very clearly that it was published
in Brooklyn NY
The author lived to a ripe old age, I met him at the bris of his
great-grandson in Lakewood N.J. in 1977. I am occasionally in touch with the husband of
his grand-daughter.

Your right about both, but that doesn't mean the whole chart is wrong. It just means that instad of son-in-law i put father-in-law and i just checked the sefer again and ur right so i changed it. And your other point also doesnt make it wrong, it merely shows that I have a lack of knowledge, if you have more information for me to put, please give. I remember when the Rabbi from frumteens.com told me about your grandfather, he told me to say I got the information from someone who's friends with his nephew Ephraim Klein. Do you know who that is and if I can email him or something? Also, did you/can you ask your grandfather about my family and how I am related to you and this whole thing. My father is Mordechai Meir Klein, his father was Reuven Chaim Klein his father was Mordechai Klein and that's how far back I know of, can you help me get more information? I'm also putting up a site right now, http://kleins.100megsfree5.com tell me what you think about all this...

i saw ur attached img, but all it had was a bunch of names, so I will explain to u my chart in words and tell me if it's correct.
*Reuven Chaim Klein, auhor of Shenos Chaim, had a son *Tzvi Dov Klein (Hersch Ber) who was the Rosh Kehilla in Munkatch. Tzvi Dov's father-in-law[Elly Klein] , no - son in law was *Chaim Schriber. Tzvi Dov had 2 sons[Elly Klein] he had more then 2 and some daughters , i just dont know all of the names : *Reuven Chaim Klein, who is the Senina Rav, and *Moshe Ezriel Klein. Moshe Ezriel had a son, *Reuven Chaim Klein (who is ur grandfather) who in turn had *Tzvi Dov who is ur father, and then comes Elly Klein. Is this right? This is what my chart says.

I found a reference to the S'ninah Rav in the Intro to the Shenos Chaim (which was written in 1985). In the attached image, the Rav's box is bigger than all the other boxes(so you can see who he is) and his father is Tzvi Dov Klein who is the son of the author of the Shenos Chaim, Reuven Chaim Klein. You your Grandfather's uncle was the grandson of the Shenos Chaim. I was wondering if you could please ask your Grandfather for more information on the family tree so that I can be more complete. And if you can, please ask him about my family, my Grandmother, Rose Klein lives in Boro Park with her two sisters, Sara Blau and Pearl Barany. My grandfather, another Reuven Chaim Klein, was nifter quite a long time ago, when my father was a mere child. Also, I made a website for the family tree if you can help me with corrections/additions/etc.. please look at it at http://kleins.100megsfree5.com/tree and tell me what you think. By the way, I was just wondering, how old are you and what yeshiva (if any? or is Elly a female name?) do you go to? Thanks for your help and have a Chag Kosher V'Sameach and a Good Shabbos.

Thank you very much .....
The purpose of making the websites was to enable people from all over the world to connect with Gedolim,
And going to kivrei zdakkim - is our connection to them ,
The websites i hope will give people some feeling of connection even if they cannot travel to actually see them .
our websites are currently under construction .....but a basic form is up and running and getting a lot of attention !!
i should like to incorporate the photos on these websites , with you permission ?
www.famousrebbes.com
www.famousrabbis.com
and www.yarzheit.com
all our sites have links between each other as they are on the same webspace server .
A few questions though , where in Europe are they buried ? have you been there ? do you have address or directions ? are there other Rebbes / Gedolim in that Beis Olam ?
I don't expect your reply as its erev yom tov ..... i am lucky ...we are ready !!!

it is called "Ashel/Eshel HaGedolim" and it was written by "Rabbi

talks about the Rabbenu Yerucham, it brings down the fact that many
commentators on the Rabbenu Yerucham died at an early age (much like
the Shem HaGedolim says) and then it says one of them was the Shenos
Chaim who was the grandfather of my wife.
This sefer was signed by the author for my grandfather. I am
wondering if anyone can relate to me more information about Rabbi
Elazar GARTENHAUS and his wife with regards to the genealogy,
biography and information about their living descendants and any
known connection they might have to the Shenos Chaim (R' Reuven

This sefer was signed by the author for my grandfather. I am
wondering if anyone can relate to me more information about Rabbi

biography and information about their living descendants and any
known connection they might have to the Shenos Chaim (R' Reuven

I have a sefer which was printed in 1958 with the Shem HaGedolim and it is
called "Ashel/Eshel HaGedolim" and it was written by "Rabbi Elazar
Gartenhaus" and was printed in a city spelled the following way: Pay Reish
Aleph Chaf Nun Yud Kuf in New York. When this sefer talks about the Rabbenu
Yerucham, it brings down the fact that many commentatorson the Rabbenu
Yerucham died at an early age (much like the Shem HaGedolim says) and then
it says one of them was the Shenos Chaim who was the grandfather of my wife.
This sefer was signed by the author for my grandfather. I am wondering if
anyone can relate to me more information about Rabbi Elazar Gartenhaus and
his wife with regards to the genealogy, biography and information about
their living descendants and any known connection they might have to the
Shenos Chaim (R' Reuven Chaim Klein of Munkatch).

lol... It's nice to see some people inhertied a sense of humor. Don't get worried, I can't send the picture of the sefer until my little brother wakes up because the scanner is in his room on his computer. (Who knows when that will be? Lazy Californians wake up at Chatzos... During vacation like today, I daven at 6:30 in the morning, not quite Netz, but the earliest Ashkenaz minyan in town.) By the way, do you daven Nusach Sefard?

I've never seen the name spelled "Elly" before, I've seen Eli, Elie, Ely, but not Elly so I was wondering if it might be short for Elisheva or something (*shrugs*). Not everyone is Los Angeles is a liberal trash head, just the politicians and all the non-frum Jews. I happen to be 16 years old and I attend "Yeshiva Gedolah of Los Angeles - Michael Diller High School." Did you look at the family tree I made and/or speak to your grandfather?

Sorry for sending the message in an unclear way, but I will try to clear
things up right now (by the way, I tried to include some of this information
in my orginal post, but the moderator made me take it out, because he said I
am advertising the sefer or something): I am asking about the connection
between the Shenos Chaim and the Rama and Taz, is there one? Can there be a
pedigree chart wirtten to prove it? I have the 1985 edition which was once
printed by Mechon Yerushalayim and has been out of print for a few years
already (the sefer is on their website, but with no price listed), if you
have it, I would love to get my hands on a copy of the 1871 edition or even
an original. I am supposedly a descendant of this Rav, but I don't exactly
know how (My name is Reuven Chaim, my father is Mordechai Meir, his father
is Reuven Chaim, his father was Mordechai and he was a desecendant). I was
wondering if you can also get my information on his current relatives and
who they are (contact information is possible?) And I would like to know
more about the "curse" on Rabbenu Yerucham's Toldos Adom V'Chava. --Yasher
Koach for you help and have a good Shabbos
Then after Shabbos I have this to say: I didn't think that I had this
sefer "Shem HaGedolim," but cleaning through my seforim for Pesach, I came
across that sefer in a three volume set which used to belong to my
Grandfather A"H. I looked up "Rabbenu Yerucham" and it had almost precisely
the information which you said to me. Then in the last volume of the book,
there was a mini-sefer inside it called the "Ashel (Ha)Gedolim" and it was
signed (probably by the writer) in illegible hebrew or yiddish. I looked up
"Rabbenu Yerucham" in that sefer and it talks about this curse and it says
that the Shenos Chaim evaded the curse and then it proceeds to say that the
writer of this work (Ashel (Ha) Gedolim)'s wife is the grand-daughter of the
writer of the Shenos Chaim. Can someone help me fill in the names and all
the other blank spots that I have? Thank you to whoever does so in advance.

A query to this site reads as follows: -
***********."Hi, my name is Reuven Chaim Klein. I am a descendant of
***********Reuven Chaim Klein who wrote the sefer Shenos Chayim (which is
**********a commentary on the Rebbenu Yerucham). He lived in the city of
***********Munkatch. I have a copy of his sefer. In it, where describing
**********himself, it says he is of the offspring of the TaZ and the ReMa.
**********I was wondering if you can help me get more information."
......................................................................
I would like to help Mr Klein, but let me grouch and grouse (I think the
latter is a Kosher bird) a little first.
Our interlocuter says he want more information but does not let us now that
what he has got. Is he asking for leads for the connection between the
Shenos Chaim and the Taz & Remo? Which edition does he possess (see later)?
Where and when was the sefer published? If he has no further information it
would be better to state so clearly.
I must confess that I ignore many posts to this forum because the the asker
has not made all this sort of stuff clear.
Having got that off my chest; a brief note about Mr Klein's namesake
ancestor. According to Chachmei Hungaria (by YY Cohen- Jeruslem 1997 p356)
R' Reuven Chaim son of Binyomin Eliezer was born in Cracow in 1826 and died
in Davidkof (spelling?) near Muncasz in 1873. His family name had originally
been Ungar or Auerbach but being orphaned at an early age, adopted a new
name. Curiously, Freedberg's bibliographical dictionary has yet another
surname for him. (I suspect a copying error.)
As to the work Shenos Chaim, which Mr K correctly describes as a commentary
on Rabbenu Yerucham, this was originally published in Lemberg (today Lviv)
in 1871. If this is the edition seen, may I suggest he gets hold of a later
edition published in Jerusalem in 1985. This includes a preface by a
knowledgable contemporary Talmid Chacham, R' Moshe Zishe Kunstlicher. There
might be more information there.
Incidentally, the Rabbenu Yerucham referred to is a 14th Centyry Gadol, R'
Yerucham ben Meshulam, a pupil of the Rosh, who went into exile from
Provence to Spain. In contradistinction to many Gedolim who are commonly
named by their seforim - e.g. Chafetz Chaim, Chazon Ish - , when talmudists
say Rabbenu Yerucham, they ususally do not mean the person, but his two part
halachic sefer, Odom Vechavoh & Mayshorim.
There is a most curious story told about this last opus. The Chida (18th
Cent) in his Shem Hagdolim states that there exists a belief or tradition
that anybody who publishes a commentary on Rabbenu Yerucham is destined for
an early grave. It may be noted that the author of the Shenos Chaim died
aged 47 !
I hope the above is of general interest without being unconnected with
genealogy.

Jerusalem 1997 p. 356) R' Reuven Chaim son of Binyomin Eliezer was
born in Cracow in 1826 and died in Davidkof (spelling?) near Muncasz
in 1873. His family name had originally been Ungar or Auerbach but
being orphaned at an early age, adopted a new name. Curiously,
Freedberg's bibliographical dictionary has yet another surname
for him. (I suspect a copying error.)
As to the work Shenos Chaim, which Mr. K correctly describes as a
commentary on Rabbenu Yerucham, this was originally published in
Lemberg (today Lviv) in 1871. If this is the edition seen, may I
suggest he gets hold of a later edition published in Jerusalem in
1985. This includes a preface by a knowledgable contemporary Talmid
Chacham, R' Moshe Zishe Kunstlicher. There might be more information
there.
Incidentally, the Rabbenu Yerucham referred to is a 14th Centyry
Gadol, R' Yerucham ben Meshulam, a pupil of the Rosh, who went into
exile from Provence to Spain. In contradistinction to many Gedolim
who are commonly named by their seforim - e.g., Chafetz Chaim,
Chazon Ish - when talmudists say Rabbenu Yerucham, they ususally do
not mean the person, but his two part halachic sefer, Odom Vechavoh
& Mayshorim.
There is a most curious story told about this last opus. The Chida
(18th Cent.) in his Shem Hagdolim states that there exists a belief
or tradition that anybody who publishes a commentary on Rabbenu
Yerucham is destined for an early grave. It may be noted that the
author of the Shenos Chaim died aged 47!
I hope the above is of general interest without being unconnected
with genealogy.

It says on your site by the 23 of Teves, "HaGaon Moreinu v"Rabeinu Rabbi Reuven Haim Klein (son of Rabbi Binyamin Eliezar Ungar-Aurbach), author of "Shanot Hayim" on "Toldot Adam v' Hava," Av Beit Din Galil Davidkoff, passedaway. Thank You.

Hi, my name is Reuven Chaim Klein. I am a descendant of Reuven Chaim
Klein who wrote the sefer Shenos Chayim (which is a commentary on
the Rebbenu Yerucham). He lived in the city of Munkatch. I have a
copy of his sefer. In it, where describing himself, it says he is
of the offspring of the TaZ and the ReMa. I was wondering if you can
help me get more information.

I've inserted my comments into your text, in bold and underscored for easy
finding.
In a message dated 3/18/04 1:42:59 AM, rachack@futurecities.com writes:
<< (aight I'm sending this email to everyone... I think...)
No you didn't, and it is a good thing, too, since not many would
know what, exactly, you are talking about. I still don't know what the books
you mention are, and how they relate to this. Even you admit that.
You might get a hold of Laci Bacsi's book about Bonyhad. Yes he wrote a book
about the town's history [hope you know what Bonyhad is/was] and it contains a
lot of information which might help you, as well as being a fascinating
account of a particular branch of your personal history.
If your parents don't have a copy of it, I am certain he will be happy to
send you an autographed copy.
Also, Spell Check is a program I highly reccommend. Not only will you come
off as being very literate, it will actually teach you how to spell by pointing
out your errors, repeatedly, until you stop making them. In the case of words
which make no sense at all (like the word you started this letter with...
well, you'll be the first to know)
About the tree stuff, I was planning on backing it up, but then I accidently
deleted alot of it (it's a bad habit to press shift+del when deleteing files),
I guess I will have to go through my Primary Source once again (that being
the Shenos Chaim book which was written by a common ansector shared between me
and Reb Yossi, but I still don't know how that relates to me personally it
seems to be applicable many generations ago.) If I get done a decent amount of
stuff, I will print it out and keep copies in my house. I had worked alot from
that book mentioned above and also I had found someone who is working on the
genalogy of the Bnei Yissachar and he helped me a little bit with some spelling
and an extra generation.
"Tree stuff" ? If your grandmother would have read this, she would think you
have taken up gardening. It's called a Family Tree.
But, I suppose you've had a dialog about this with the people you have sent
this too, but if you will want help on the Barany/Blau/Kuttner side, (a) please
explain to your elders what your project is about, (b) specify what it is you
would like for them to supply you with. I've already told you in my last
letter who might be able to help you with this.
I will have to re-do everything I got from that book next time I have off
from school, but Yossi also sent me some information about "the next generation"
(ie. Becky's kids, Dani's, Ari's, Elana's...) and a little bit about the
Kuttner's, who were common ansectors to everyone in this email.
BTW, you spelled "Kuttner" wrong on the site. Little things like that
are embarrassing. Again, information about Barany/Kuttner/Blau, going back
two to three (or more) generations, is readily available for the asking, if you
ask the right people, who I mentioned in my last email.
I received Leslie's suggestions in a .dat file, but I don't have a program
that can open it, so please re-send it either as a .doc. .rtf .txt .html or in
an email.
My attachment was a simple Word document. I don't know why you could not open
it. If you still have it, launch Word and try again, only because Word
retains the format I copied from your website. But am sending it again to you in one
of the other formats now. I have to wonder though, with all the crap you and
your brother must have downloaded from the internet in your heyday, ever think
about grabbing Stuff Expander, Graphic Converter, Decoder, Acrobat, Unzip
(Spell Check) programs and the like? Most of them are free, so I had assumed that
computer geniuses like the two of you are fully equipped.
What I also ask is if everyone can find me any other family trees lying
around their house or something.
Yeah, I've got an oak tree right here in my living room. Came through the
window the last storm. If you are going to try your hand at precise
communication, my advice is that you back-track a bit, explain to people what the project
is about. You want them to put aside the laundry and take the time to do a
little homework for you. Explain how you've taken on the admirable effort to
preserve our history, to be the Keeper of the Flame (if need be, Google will help
define the phrase for you). Again, the right people are Laci Bacsi, Edith
Gruen, Agi Zwick, your grandmother and her sisters, and William Blau to help
facilitate communications because of his close proximity to them. I do not believe
Israel Zwick gives a rat's ass about this, and I would also be surprised if
Elana did. That leaves Yossi, Billy, and me. What about your Dad? Does he know
about this and has he tried to help you with it?
(I know you have one Yossi, I had a log of a Yahoo! conversation between us
and u said u got one from some Schwatrz guy or something). And by the way, I
didn't make http://kleins.100megsfree5.com/tree by myself, I am using a
genealogy program that I downloaded called GenoPro and it generated the site.
I think found the phantom Zwick website:
http://home.earthlink.net/~israel.zwick/ I think I figured out their email adresses too.
Yup. The Awicks travel in posses. They have all been recently Earthlinked.
Daddy Z. has them all on one frequency and account,
using the old multiple email address ploy. If you've got one of their
addresses, you should be able to hack the rest.
Leslie, About the Arab joke, I like my interpretation but it can go either
way.
No, with the Arbs it can only go one way.
And about dropping Anakin, that email address is a classic that I started
using back on December 18,1998. I don't even like Star Wars any more, but it's a
classic and you don't tamper with a classic (plus I just revived the email
address recently after a long retirement).
I am also a very sentimental guy.
Just to prove I am right there with you in my reverence for the real
"classics"
(screw Citizen Kane, Ben Hur, West Side Story, and Exodus) from the
Hollyshlock Dream Machine, I have sent you this email from one of my other addresses
which
I don't expect to be checking on too often, in the future. So continue to use
lesbarany@aol.com
Best regards, Grasshopper,
Don't take the cynical tone of this response to heart.
It's been that kind of (long) day.

1. Kuttner has 2 t's in it
2. You should be consistent; decide on Hebrew or
English names.
3. Michal's maiden name is Werbloswki (although it may
end with a 'y'; I'm not sure)
4. Malka's (not Malki) maiden name is Albert.
5. Meira should be Meira Leah (since you're putting in
middle names as well).
5. The top level Kuttners are Meir and Devorah
6. Debra's maiden name is Hornestay (not Klein)
7. The Ciments' children are: Chaim, Yaakov, and
Binyamin. I don't know if they have middle names
8. Dani & Malka's children are Yosef and Miriam Bayla
9. Ari & Michal's children are Yehuda Simcha,Rochel
Bayla, and Tamar
10. Elana and Shlomo's child is Avrohom
That's all for now,

Subject: Family Tree
Reuven,
The family-tree is a worthwhile project.
The people whose help you might ask for with filling in your blanks are Edith
Gruen, Bill Blau, Leslie Blau and your uncle Yossi in Israel. In fact, Bill
can sit with your mother and the folks in Boro Park one evening and try to
document how far they can reach back. Just tried to copy this to Bill but, again,
he either switched emails or is down again.
Maybe you should send out an email to the different branches of the families
and request they look at what you have already done and ask they to supply you
with whatever additional information they can.
If they decide to help you, I think you should go on with your efforts.
My other suggestion is that you back up the information off-site, in your
computer
or on an external harddrive. Maybe Uncle Joe has some ideas?
I will check out the site.

Hi my name is Reuven Chaim Klein. My father has a tradition from his family (his father was nifter when my father was a mere 7 years old) that an ansector of ours(who had the same name as mine and my grandfather) wrote a sefer called the Shenos Chayim which is a sefer on the "Rabbienu Yerucham." This sefer was printed in Lemberg in 1871 and later in Yerushalayim by "Mechon Yerushalayim" in the 1980s. In this sefer in makes mention that my ansector, Reuven Chaim Klein lived in Munkatch and was a descendant of the Ramah and the Taz. I would like to be able to trace my lineage as far up as I can, is there any help you can provide me here? I have a copy of the sefer but I can't quite decipher some of it, and I can't link my family to the author. Can you tell me of any living relatives to the author and any more information about him. (I also know that he was a student of the Chasam Sofer.) And I can also give you some more information about the sefer which I have, but we don't really know much about my family. So can you please help me look into this?

Question: Can you send me all the information you have about a rabbi called Shnos Chayim that wrote a book called the shenos chayim, a commentary on the Rabbainu Yerucham.
And send me information on any living reletives?
Answer: Rabbi Reuven Chayim Klein was born in 1826 in Cracow. He studied in the yeshiva of the Chatam Sofer in Pressburg and in the yeshiva of the Gaon Rabbi Meir Aish, the author of the Imrei Aish. He served as the rabbi in the area of Davidoff.
In 1871 he published his essay “Shnot Chayim†on a section of the sefer “Rabbeinu Yeruchamâ€. He passed away on 22 Tevet, 1873. He died and was buried in Vienna. In 1985, a new edition was published by his descendants in the framework of Machon Yerushalayim.
The descendants whose names appear in the beginning of the sefer are:
His great-granddaughter - Mrs. Sarah Bainhorn (Rechov HaRav Frank 40, Jerusalem POB 16217) and her sons-in-law, Moshe Goldmintz and Moshe Mordechai Kahane.
Also, the Shapiro family - the “Bnai Zion†and his descendants.
It appears from the sefer, that his family is connected to the Monkatch Chassidim and that his children were among the important Chassidim there. Therefore, it is worthwhile to inquire with the Monkatch Chassidim in the States. -------- 3/6/2001 10:06:11 AM
