Rabbi Binyamin Eliezer Ungar-Auerbach is the oldest relative I can trace up

son-in-law of the Rosh Beis Din of Krakow, Rabbi Ya'akov HaLevi (formerly of

I read your message to ravsig about R'Benyamin Eliezer
Ungar-Auerbach. Although I am unable to help you with
your connection to the Taz, I thought I'd pass on a bit of
information. Sorry if you are already aware of it:

In Krakow there was another Auerbach-Lichtig marriage.
Berish Auerbach (ben Moshe ben Meir) born around 1824,
married in 1844 to Rivka Schwenk daughter of Nathan
Schwenk and Frumet Lichtig. Frumet was the daughter
of Lebel Lichtig (1783-1838) who was the son of Chaskel
Lichtig (born 1753) son of Lebel (born around 1730). The
last person would be a contemporary of Zvi Hersz, your
ancestor. If both Lichtig families married Auerbachs, then
there is a likelihood that they were related, considering that
R'Yakov Lichtig also showed up in Krakow in the late 1810s,
when he seems to have died. If there is a connection to the
Taz, then Lebel's family might also be connected. Every
clue might help. Good luck.

Hi Reuven,
The American and Israeli branches of the ISSEROFF family are also descended from the TAZ through our great grandmother Soshe Greenberg, the daughter of Rabbi Notte Greenberg (a Chassid and a Kohen) of Novyy Konstantinov, Ukraine. However, I was more interested in your mention of ISSERLES as one of your ancestors. Are you by chance a direct male descendent of an ISSERLES or of the brother of the RAMO? I ask because I suspect that the family name of the ISSEROFF was once ISSERLIN or ISSERLES and would to compare my YDNA to that of male descendent of the ISSERLIN/ISSERLES family.

(I'm answering your questions in reverse order, because to understand the
second answer, you must first read the first.)

The Shenos Chaim was recently reprinted by Machon Yerushalayim (a prominent
publishing company in the headquartered in the Old City of Jerusalem) in
1985 (through the sponsorship of a distant relative who lives in Meah
Shearim and descends from Ramah. Her name is Sarah Beinhorn nee Klein, and
she herself wrote a book detailing her experiences during the Holocaust. I
visited her last summer). Since 1985 it has been out of print, and Mechon
Yerushalayim no longer sells it. I have a copy of that 1985 print, which is
hard to find nowadays. (An older print from 1871 is surely rarer.) The sefer
Toldos HaRamah was privately printed 2004 by Avraham Klein of London (in
honor of his daughter's wedding). This print was based on the 1992 print
from Yeshivas Chidushei HaRim (Ger). I am not aware of any means of getting
this sefer, although the more recent publisher sent me a copy about a year
ago.

The mini-biography in introduction to the 1985 Shenos Chaim states that Rav

Dear Reuven:

There was a Yaakov Lewit of Wolbrom, born circa 1769, died 1814 in
Wolbrom. He was married circa 1790 to Elka (bas Getzel) Berman. Their son
Shabsa Lewit was my gt-gt-gt-gt-grandfather - he was my great-grandfather
Shabsa Lis' maternal grandmother's father. There were many Lewit's in
Wolbrom in the 19th century who, as best I remember, were all from the same
family. Do you know about when Yakov HaLevi lived and died? If the timing
is the same, then there is a possibility it is the same person as there
were probably not that many Leviim named Yakov running around Wolbrom in the

very early 1800's. On the flip side, I have no knowledge of the Yakov Lewit

that I have seen the records for actually moving to Krakow.

How could I obtain copies of the Shnos Chaim and also the book on Toldos

HaRamo?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Kol Tuv.

Sorry, as far as I know there are no Sinais in my tree.
The WEISSBLUM family referenced in my sig is the Noam Elimelech, of whom I supposedly descend, but I have not really been able to track down the exact line over there (the tradition is is that it comes from my father's father's mother, Chaya Zlata Mermelstein nee Klein nee Friedman, who was the daughter of Eliezer Friedman and Devorah Eckstein, one of those two being descendants of the Noam Elimelech).
The name UNGAR-AUERBACH comes from my ggg-grandfather, Rav Reuven Chaim Klein (author of Shenos Chaim) whose last name used to be Ungar-Auerbach, until he was orphaned and adotped the surname of his childless hosts KLEIN. His father was R' Binyamin Eliezer Ungar-Auerbach from Wolbrom, Poland and who lived in Krakow. Above that I don't know.
Have a good day,

Does the name Sinai or any variation of it appear in your family as either a personal or surname?
There are many Sinais that stem from Krakow throughout the 1800s (and may stem from Rabbi Sinai
Lowe brother of the Maharal MiPraque) including Sinais that are intermarried with Auerbach.Orbachs
and Weisslbum.
My anscestor Rabbi Sinai Steiner was ABD of Ulanow His descendents inmarried with Ungar,
Aschkenazi, Amkrauts & and Halberstams
The name Sinai also appears among the Tatz family of South Africa.
The name Sinai is hallmark name and most all are interrelated so if it appears in your family,
its origin is most certainl worth investigating.
Sincerely,
D, Stone

First of all, I'd like to apologize for not responding as quickly as I
should have. I overlooked your email sitting in my genealogy folder of my
email program, and I don't have access to that out of my house and I've been
away from home for the pastfew weeks. So I'm sorry for not responding
sooner.

All I know is that the Shenos Chaim's mother (Binyamin Eliezer
Ungar-Auerbach's wife) was the daughter of Rabbi Yaakov HaLevi of Krakow
(brother of Rav Yosef Charif-Lichtig) who was the son of Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch
HaLevi LIZTES(sp) from Ambrovia, who was a direct male descendant of the TaZ
(he was a Levi). I'm not really sure if that helps, so please email me back
if you need more help. Feel free to search around on my genealogy website,
http://www.myhomeloancompany.com/kleins for more information about the
CHARIF family. Be sure to check all three years of archives.

I hope you had a good Shabbos and Yuntifff.

You haven't really said which towns this Mermelstein family which you have
are from. My relations to a Mermelstein family stem from my
great-grandmother's (Chaya Zlata Mermelstein nee Klein nee Friedman)
marriage to Reb Shlomo Mermelstein (after the death of my great-grandfather,
R' Mordechai Klein). They lived in Kleczanev, Kliachanove, Klyachanovo or
however you spell and pronounce it. It was town near the city of Munkatch,
Munkacs, Munkachevo, or however you spell and pronounce that. Somewhere on
my site http://www.myhomeloancompany.com/kleins is a family tree of my
Mermelstein family, the names that you gave me don't really match, and I'm
almost positive my Mermelstein relatives are NOT Kohanim.

I hope you had a good Yuntiff.

Good Afternoon. I saw you web site and believe that there is a good
chance we are either remotely related or possibly you could point me in
a direction. In my tree there are 2 Mermelstein lines (could be one but
I haven't found the connection yet) and a associated Klein line.

I believe that one of my great-grandfathers, Joseph Mermelstein (Yosef
Zev ben Yishayahu Tzui) (1887-1981) was the son of Sol Mermelstein and
Pearl Klein. He married Sarah Mauskoph in 1911.

Another one of my great-grandfathers, Samuel Mermelstein (Shlomo Zalman
ben Shmuel Aharon HaCohen) (1886-1949) was the son of Schmeil Aaron and
Fannie Froimowitz.

This is the side of my family I know least about and have been searching
for a very long time. If any of this connects with anything you have or
any advice you could give me in my search, I would be most appreciative.
