Good question! In fact, I have been asking this question for over 20 years now. I wish I had the answer. The only clue I have is a mesorah from the family that Devorah Eckstein was a descendant of the Noam Elimelech. I keep trying to find out more, but nobody knows. I do hope you can help figure this out. Let me know if I can help in any way.
I'm not familiar with "Rabbi Yaakov Klein from Brooklyn". Who is he? Looking at Geni.com all I see under Leah (Friedman) Klein is her son Berish Klein. IIRC, Berish Klein = Bernard Klein who was professor of history in Kingsborough College. Did Leah (Friedman) Klein have more children? Did Bernard Klein have children? I'm admittedly weak on this branch of the family, but were you in touch with David Friedman or Heshy Friedman? I'm CC'ing other members of the family, maybe somebody has more to say on this.
