RE: Isserles/Weissblum

I only have Kabbalos from my family that I am a descendant of the ReMa and Noam Elimelech but I don't know exactly how. Although the Kabbalah about the Noam Elimelech comes from my father's father's mother's side of the family.

I was reading your old post on the JewishGen website archives and was wondering if you have information about Weissblum and Isserles families.

I am the genealogist of our family. Pomerantz familiy members have requested me to look into it a possible connection with Rav Moshe Isserles.

My husband has Weissblum cousins and one relative (Blau, nee Leidner) tells me that these Weissblums descend from R. Elimelech of Lizensk.  Some other family members mentioned that they have heard that their family is descended from a "Rabbi Isserles", as they put it.

If you have information about the two surnames ISSERLES and WEISSBLUM that you can share with me, perhaps I can determine if what they think is true.

Subject: Rabbi SEGAL, CHARIF, and HALEVI

For quite some time now, I have known that my gggg-grandfather, Rabbi
Binyamin Eliezer Ungar-Auerbach of Krakow (father of Rabbi Reuven Chaim
Klein wrote the Shenos Chaim) married the daughter of Rabbi Ya'akov HaLevi
from Wolbrom. Rav Ya'akov HaLevi was the brother of Rav Yosef Lichtig/Charif
HaLevi. The brothers were in turn sons of Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch HaLevi, who was
a direct male descendant of Rabbi Dovid Segal HaLevi, the TaZ (Turei Zahav).
For some time I have been looking for the exact line of connection between
Rav Tzvi Hirsch HaLevi and his direct male ansector the TaZ. I have yet to
get the exact line of lineage. However, I recently found out that the
Maharsha (who lived in the same era as the TaZ and was also a Levi) had a
son-in-law named Rabbi Yitzchack Segal Charif HaLevi. I was wondering if
this son-in-law of the Maharsha had anything to do with the line which I am
trying to trace here.

(See http://www.myhomeloancompany.com/kleins for more of my research in my
family's genealogy project.)

Surnames being researched:
In Munkatch(Mukachevo) and its surrounding areas(especially a village called
Kleczanev or Klyachanovo ):
ECKSTEIN, FREIDMAN, KLEIN, MERMELSTEIN, UNGAR-AUERBACH
In Bonyhad, a village in Hungary: KUTTNER
From anywhere: ISSERLES, WEISSBLUM, SIRKES

Actually, he was probably born about 1745 (assuming he lived about 75 years) so probably add one more generation. I will see if I can find out more.

I am no expert, but to my knowledge, the TAZ had two children who died young and without issue in 1611, R. Shlomo and R. Mordechai, who were killed in the Lemberg riots of 1664, a son, Isaiah of Komerna, a daughter who was the first wife of R. Meir Heilprin, another daughter who married R. Gad, and, according to some sources, another son, R. Samuel, who was the son-in-law of R. Samson of Ostropoli.   If R. Yakov Halevi Segal died in 5579 (1819), this would mean he was likely born around 1725.  It is highly unlikely for him to have been a grandson to the TAZ who lived from 1586.-1667. However, in Hebrew the term neched meaning grandson is also used to mean a later descendant, so it seems more likely that R. Yakov is 4-5 generations removed from teh TAZ.  Segal is the name adopted by several descendants of the TAZ.

You seem to be the internet's expert on the Turei Zahav's family. Do you happen to know if the TaZ had a son or son-in-law who was a Levi named Tzvi? Please see the quotation below from http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/wolbrom/wol046.html which seems to imply that Reb Yakov HaLevi was a grandson of the TaZ, so his father Reb Tzvi, must have been a son or son-in-law of the TaZ.

There was the death of yet another Wolbromer Rav in Krakow, after he had left his post in Wolbrom and became Rav in Krakow. About him there exist more facts. This was the Rav Yaakov Halevi Sg"l B"hR' Tsvi, a Rav in Galicia's Dambrova, a grandson of the great Rebbi Dovid Halevi (auther of Toori-Zahav). In his youth, Rebbi Yaakov learned by the Gaon Rebbi Yehudah Liber Harif (that his name should be remembered with blessing; a son of R. Binyamin Korngold, born in Krakow). Rebbi Yaakov learned by him together with his brother, Rebbi Yosef Harif Halevi Abd"k Zbaraf in Hungary. After Rebbi Yaakov received ordination he became Rav in Wolbrom, and there he set to work in Torah and the service of Hashem, and corresponded with the Greats of the generation. From the rabbinical responsa literature we know that he corresponded with two of the Greats: Rebbi Elazar Lev, composer of the book of responsa "Shemen Rukeach", and Rav Pusek, Rebbi Avraham Tsvi-Hirshl, Rav in Pilica and afterwards in Pietrkov. The same two rabinical greats (Gaons) wrote to him and proffered upon him great honor with important titles. Rebbi Yaakov Halevi finally left his post in Wolbrom and grew even greater, he was nominated as Rosh of the Beis- Din in Krakow. He died the second of Heshvon, 5579 (according to the Pinkas - book of records - of the community).

Thank you in advance for your help,

Yes that is the TaZ. MY ggg-grandfather was the grandson of Rabbi Yaakov
HaLevi, brother of Rabbi Yosef Charif, who was the Chief Rabbi of Wolbrom
and was a descendant of the TaZ.

You have Rivke Sirkes married to Dovid Segal. . . Is this David HaTaZ? David

person? You just have her isolated in the Family Tree that you have on your
